A No-Stress Book Week Celebration
At Brenbeal, we believe the true meaning of Book Week is to celebrate stories. We also know our families are busy, so we opted for a stress-free event this year. No costumes, just books! We invited families to share their favourite books from home, and the response was wonderful. In every room, we had parents come to read to the children, and they all loved the opportunity to hear lots and lots of stories.
In the Barraimal Room, we took our celebration a step further as children made their own books. We have been talking about books throughout the year. With Word Bird, the children have learned words like author and illustrator, cover, endpaper, character that can be antagonists or protagonists. We have also talked about stories including an unexpected event to build interest and a solution at the end. To make our own stories, we worked in small groups with an adult prompting with questions like “what happened next?’ or “how can we solve the problem?” The words and illustrations came straight from the children as they took turns to add to the book. Here is sample of a very interesting story that they have made on their own.
